Anti-Counterfeit Verification for Auto Parts and Lubricants

Africa's vehicle parc is growing faster than its official parts channels, and the gap is filled by an aftermarket where a counterfeit brake pad sells for a third of the genuine price. For a parts or lubricants brand the damage is doubled: the failure is blamed on you, and the warranty claim often lands on you too.

A safety category sold on price

Industry associations in Nigeria estimate counterfeit parts cost the economy more than two billion US dollars a year in lost activity and revenue. In Kenya, a Toyota survey reported that eight out of ten vehicles carried at least one counterfeit part — a 2011 figure, quoted often since, and old enough that it should be treated as an indication of scale rather than a current measurement.

The economics are unforgiving. Where a mechanic or owner is choosing between a genuine brake pad and one at a third of the price, awareness campaigns alone will not change the decision. What changes it is a check that takes one scan at the counter and tells the buyer, before money changes hands, whether the part is what the box says.

Major brands have converged on the same answer. Toyota, Bosch and TotalEnergies have all expanded QR-based authentication, SMS verification codes and tamper-evident packaging across African markets.

Lubricants: the refill problem

Engine oil has its own failure mode. The bottle is the brand, and an empty genuine bottle has resale value to a counterfeiter. Protection depends on where the code sits: under the cap, on the tamper-evident seal, or on an inner liner, so reading it destroys the seal. A code printed on the outside of a label protects against a badly copied label and nothing else — we will tell you which of those you are buying.

Distributor and dealer verification matters more here than in most categories, because lubricants move through workshops and roadside outlets rather than formal retail. Each distributor can be issued a verification code, so their stock checks are recognised as trade scans, and stock handled well outside a distributor's assigned region raises a diversion signal.

What you get

  1. 1A unique signed code per part or bottle, printed by your existing supplier or generated from your own systems over the API.
  2. 2One-scan verification in the buyer's browser, with no app to install at a roadside stall.
  3. 3Clone detection, so a copied label reused across thousands of units shows up as one serial scanned in many places.
  4. 4Destination-market geofencing to expose stock shipped for one country and sold in another.
  5. 5Verified distributor and workshop scanning that does not consume the customer's first scan.
  6. 6Geo-tagged counterfeit reports from buyers and mechanics, with the outlet named.

Auto Parts & Lubricants: common questions

What brands in this category ask us before they start.

Counterfeiters will just photocopy our QR codes. What stops that?

Copying the image is easy and does not help them. Every code is signed with a key they do not have, so an invented code fails validation immediately. If they copy a genuine label and print thousands, every fake carries the same serial — and one serial scanned repeatedly, on many devices, in many towns, is flagged as a clone. The brand is alerted and the buyer is warned.

Can our distributors check stock without using up the customer's first scan?

Yes. A signed-in distributor's scan is recorded as a verified trade check. The unit stays unsold, so the customer who eventually buys it still receives a clean first-scan result and proof-of-purchase code.

Where should the code go on an oil bottle?

Under the tamper-evident seal or cap liner wherever your filling line allows, so the code cannot be read without breaking the seal and a refilled bottle has nothing valid to show. If that is not possible on your line, we will say what level of protection the alternative actually gives you.
